QUESTION RECEIVED:
If you blaspheme the Holy Spirit
in your mind, but can’t control it and don't mean it, will you get punished eternally in hell?

MY ANSWER:
Be clear about my answer - In the passage about blaspheming the Holy
Spirit and no forgiveness, Jesus is preaching to the Pharisees. The Pharisees are the Jewish religious
leaders who were experts in their religious law. These men seemed to care about their position
and living a harsh legalistic interpretation of the law. The Pharisees had no compassion or grace for others
not like them.
Matthew 12:32 New King James
Version (NKJV)
32 Anyone who speaks a word against the
Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy
Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.
Here is the bad news (Hold on
the Good News is coming at the end!)
Humans are sinners and will
receive a judgment.
Psalm 9:17 (NKJV)
17 The
wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.
Here is more bad news. We are all sinners. (Keep reading – the Good
News is coming!)
Romans 3:10
New King James Version (NKJV)
10 As it is written: “There is none
righteous, no, not one;
In both the Old and New Testaments
we are told to accomplish what is an impossible task on our own and to be holy
and not to sin and have the character of the Lord.
1 Peter 1:15-16 (NKJV)
15 but as He who called you is holy, you
also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am
holy.”
We are given what seems to be
an impossible demand by Christ in Scripture.
Matthew 5:48 (NKJV)
48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just
as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Good News! – The work of
salvation was accomplished as the Father decreed salvation through the Son as He
the Son is was fully God and fully man, lived a perfect sinless life, died on
the cross as a substitute for all who would repent of their sins and believe. Christ paid for the sins with His sacrificial
life of those who repent and believe. Those
who believe are declared righteous in the judgment of the Father like Christ. Those who when drawn to repentance by the Holy
Spirit repent and trust Christ for salvation are ‘Born Again’ or ‘Saved’ and
have pardon of sin, peace with God and citizenship in Heaven. The saved will be judged as ‘Righteous’ at
the judgment because of the work of Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be
sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
My question is then – “Do unrepentant sinners get punished?” – YES
is the answer.
Again the Good News was accomplished by God’s
decree and is the the Son’s work on the cross and the wooing of the sinner of the Holy
Spirit is God’s plan of salvation for you.
John 3:5-7 (NKJV)
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say
to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom
of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of
the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born
again.’
So to sin, as we all do,
would lead to punishment or hell without the work of the Holy Spirit.
To deny the work of the Holy
Spirit drawing people to salvation is unforgivable because God’s gracious plan
of salvation is rejected.
The Pharisees and people
today, who Jesus was preaching to in Matthew 12:32, will receive the judgment
of hell if they actively refuse or deny the plan of salvation prompted by the
Holy Spirit.
It is therefore impossible to
blaspheme the Holy Spirit when you have repented and believed in the gospel.
John 3:36 (NKJV)
36 He who believes in the Son has
everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but
the wrath of God abides on him.”
