Trinity and Baptismal Confusion

Question Received:
When I got saved did I receive Jesus or the Holy Spirit in my heart? What did I get baptised in, the Spirit of Jesus or the Holy Spirit? Was Jesus around at creation?

Your question really is about the Trinity and the roles the Father, Son and Holy Spirit play in salvation. Patrick of Ireland had a tremendous illustration of the Trinity. Patrick was a great evangelist. He evangelized Ireland around 400 A.D. People want to talk about silly legends of Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland. Modern advertising use the evangelist to sell beer. Patrick used the shamrock to show the that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. The shamrock, or three leaf clover each has a leaf connected to the center. The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God yet they all three retain a separate identity. The Godhead or Great Three in One is the Trinity. All three are God with separate identities yet are coequal. This mystery baffles other religions. Cults have taught wrongly about the Trinity. The Trinity is one of the essentials of the Christian faith. Trinity is not a bible word. Plenty of Bible verses show the role of the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in Salvation and creation.

Jews and "oneness cults" ( The belief that there is no trinity and only Jesus) are often confused by Deuteronomy 6:4 [NASB] "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!". God often refers to Himself as we in the Old Testament. In the New Testament we can clearly see the work of the Trinity. Matthew 3:16 [NASB] " After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,".

In salvation we are not saved by water baptism. We are saved by work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Christ died to pay for the sins committed against God's law by those who would be saved. The Spirit convicts people of sin and draws people to repentance. We are baptised in obedience to Christ's commands. We have the wholeness of God the father, Son and Holy Spirit in our hearts. Ephesians 1:13 [NASB] "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise. ".

In the fullness of the Trinity Jesus Christ was in creation. This same power of God communes with us. Are you born again as described in John chapter 3. There should be no doubt what Spirit dwells in you if you are saved. Trust fully that the Trinity is active in Salvation and Creation.
